Who are we?
Rethink Mental Illness is a charity that believes a better life is possible for millions of people affected by mental illness.
Over 40 years ago, one man bravely spoke about his family’s experiences of mental illness in a letter to the Times and in the process brought together hundreds to talk about their experiences of mental illness and support each other.
Today we directly support almost 60,000 people every year across England to get through crises, to live independently and to realise they are not alone.
When I was first ill, I had no hope. Through Rethink Mental Illness I found people with real understanding of what I was going through and genuine expertise. I’m still involved today as a member, giving back my passion and commitment.

Research & Policy
We are committed to creating change across mental health and social
services by supporting positive policy changes, and opposing
changes that harm quality of life for people affected by mental illness.
Research is vital to our understanding of mental illness. In partnership with our campaigns team we ensure that our findings are heard and make a difference to the lives of people affected by mental illness
How we do it
Our work
is overseen by the Board of Trustees, many of whom have personal
experience of mental illness, either as someone who has a diagnosis or
as a family members and carer.
A lot of our work is
funded by health authorities, who pay us to provide high quality
services across England. We also raise money for special projects and
campaigns by applying to trusts and other grant-making bodies and asking
people to donate to us.
Find out more about what we do, the impact we have and how we are funded in our Annual Review for 2010/2011, Challenging Attitudes, Changing Lives. It's free to download.
